Meaning

Even is used to talk about something that is surprising or unusual – when someone or something does or is more than one expects.

Examples:

  • It is such a gorgeous day, it must cheer even the saddest person.
  • He is always working, even when he is on holiday.

Position

Even is often put in the middle of the sentence with the verb

Examples:

  • He’s being awfully quick today, he has even seen the new patients.
  • I don’t know where I can have left them, I have even looked in the garage.
  • They are even going to get a stairlift installed.

Not Even

Not even is used to talk about something surprising or unusual , when someone or something does or is less than one expects. 

Examples:

  • We are going to be so late, he hasn’t even got dressed yet.
  • I haven’t told anybody about it, not even my husband.

With Comparatives

Even can also be used with comparatives.

Examples:

  • I thought it was busy yesterday, but today it’s even busier.
  • There is even less reason for us to move to London now that I have this new job.
  • He finds his new professor even more interesting than the last one.

With If, When and Though

Even can be used before if, when and though.

Examples:

  • He will probably specialize in tropical medicine, but even if he doesn’t he wants to work in the Third World.
  • Even when my mother is really tired, she takes time to play with the children.
  • They have all gone to the swimming pool, even though Pedro can’t swim yet.
